supporting our students in a snowstorm

Bright World offers support as students are left stranded

frozen flights to start 2026

With over 25 years preparing for January arrivals, the Bright World Team knows better than to get too comfortable over the winter holidays. January 2026, so far, has been no exception.

When severe snowstorms swept across Europe on one of the busiest arrivals days of the year, Bright World Guardianships stepped up to ensure the safety and well-being of our arriving students, some of whom were left facing endless travel delays with their connecting flights at Schiphol Airport, Amsterdam.

case study - stranded at Schiphol

Thousands of passengers were left stranded when all flights between Amsterdam and the UK were cancelled or severely delayed, and this included one of our guardianship students.

Bright World drivers are often the first to know when flights are cancelled as they wait to transfer students to schools, and on January 2nd one of our transfer companies made Maria Novais, Guardianship Care Manager, aware of the sudden cancellation.

Our student experienced one flight delay and cancellation after another, and was unable to leave Schiphol Airport due to visa restrictions. Although we do not have any staff on hand in Amsterdam, our Emergency Duty Managers were there at the end of the phone to offer support, and were poised and ready to act at any given moment.
Below is the timeline of events as they unravelled:

January 2nd

5.25 pm Our driver called Maria on the emergency phone to inform her the scheduled flight from Amsterdam to the UK had been cancelled.

5.30 pm Maria immediately contacted the students parents to make them aware of the situation and discuss arranging a new transfer for the next flight out. The student's host family was informed of the flight cancellation, and was put on standby for a new arrival time.

6.30 pm A new flight was scheduled for 9am January 3rd and we informed everyone including the school.

January 3rd

7.00 am Flights were cancelled once again and rescheduled for 4.30pm and everyone was updated.

4.00 pm Flight had been cancelled yet again.

6.00 pm With no available flights that night, the student remained at Schiphol airport yet again as Simon King, our Duty Care Manager, the parents and the school worked together to find him any alternative arrangements. New arrangements were made for our student to take the Eurostar from Schiphol to London St. Pancras on 4th January.

Despite the long, stressful days, our student arrived at school at 3.00 pm on January 4th, exhausted but with a smile on his face.

constant communication

When emergency situations arise, the Bright World Team knows that good communication is the key to keeping students safe and parents informed.

Our constant communication between the Out of Hours Duty Care Manager, Simon King, Maria Novais, the host family, the taxi drivers, the school and the student's mother, avoided an already awful situation becoming more confusing and worrying for all concerned and even more harrowing for a student who was already extremely exhausted, both physically and mentally, after more than 30 hours of disruption. We are proud that our intervention helped alleviate the situation for everyone.

Thank you all for your support and care throughout this whole situation. I truly appreciate everything you’ve done to help us get him back safely.
